Most people know that their dentist will advise them to brush and floss their teeth on a daily basis. Although brushing is a task that most people find no trouble in completing each day, flossing is another story. This follow-up to brushing can seem tedious, and even unnecessary. Statistics show, however, that those who brush and floss at least twice a day keep their teeth longer, and experience fewer dental problems.

Brushing teeth is the obvious step towards a cleaner, more attractive smile. We learn this from the time we are very young. Brushing removes food debris, and prolongs the brightness of the smile by eliminating tiny stain-causing deposits after meals. More importantly, brushing is designed to reduce the bacteria that reside in the mouth. Because oral bacteria grow and multiply quickly, frequent oral hygiene is key to sustained health. However, more is needed.

Flossing is the follow up to brushing for the simple reason that bacteria are living microorganisms that reside in all areas of the mouth. The oral structure gives bacteria places to hide from the toothbrush, such as in between teeth. When brushing, but not flossing is performed regularly, the surfaces of teeth may be cavity free, but damage can occur in between teeth, which account for about 15 percent of the overall tooth surface.

When we bathe, we wash one-hundred percent of our bodies. On the same note, we need to be vigilant about cleaning the entirety of each tooth, every day, if we want to maintain a healthy mouth and body.

When oral bacteria are not adequately removed from the mouth on a daily basis, their effects add up in the way of cavities, infection, and gum disease. As research is showing, gum disease, in particular, sets the stage for a host of concerning health problems. Not only does gum disease threaten the stability of teeth, but this condition releases bacteria freely into the body, where chronic inflammation could lead to persistent health problems including some that are very serious.

Why risk your health, when flossing can make such an impact? Asheville Smile Center is committed to helping you enjoy your best smile. Contact us today for your appointment.
