The importance of dental exams for Asheville patients
Dental exams are the best way for patients to monitor their oral health. Patients visiting the Family Dental Health of South Asheville can undergo cleanings and examinations with Dr. Christopher Port and his team. New patients are welcome to schedule an appointment and start seeing our staff for their regular dental health care needs.
What is a dental exam?
A dental examination is a time when a dentist performs a physical evaluation of the mouth. This is done to check for conditions such as periodontal disease or the formation of cavities. Many of these can be seen with a physical check of the smile. However, other conditions require the dentist to have x-rays included. X-rays allow a dentist to examine the health of the smile outside of the physical boundaries. These scans allow for the visualization of the bone and teeth underneath the gum line, helpful in diagnosing issues such as periodontal disease, bone loss, or even infections inside of the teeth which may require procedures such as root canals to resolve.
What about dental cleanings?
Many patients enjoy a dental cleaning at the same visit as their evaluation. Cleanings can remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the surfaces of the teeth and gums, ensuring optimum dental health and wellness. Cleanings are often done at appointments during which patients may be having other procedures performed. Speaking with the dentist about scheduling a cleaning with an examination is the first step.
