Complete Dental Care

Dental team in Asheville, NC explains the importance of a dental check-up

Brushing your teeth and flossing can keep your teeth, mouth, and gums healthy. However, it is critical to pair oral hygiene habits at home with a dental check-up at least biannually. Family Dental Health of South Asheville in Asheville, NC provides complete dental care including restorations and cosmetic treatments. Our team is happy to explain why a dental check-up is important.

Learning about a dental check-up

At a dental check-up, we will clean your teeth and perform a thorough examination of your mouth, teeth, and gums. We will check if there is any plaque on your teeth. Then, we remove the sticky film so it does not harden and become tartar. Brushing and flossing will not remove tartar; therefore it is critical to see dental professionals with the training and expertise to help you prevent cavities.

We can use special tools to remove tartar during a procedure called scaling. After the teeth are scaled, we use a paste to polish the teeth. We will also floss to ensure the areas between the teeth and gums are clean.

We will check your gums with a special tool to measure the spaces between the teeth and gum tissue. With healthy gums, the spaces are shallow. Deeper spaces can be signs of gum disease. We also will examine your tongue, throat, head, face, and neck to identify swelling or any other concerns.

The American Dental Association recommends x-rays are included in your dental check-up once a year. X-rays are important because they can detect issues that are not visible with the unassisted eye. They can help us examine the health of the jawbone and soft tissues.
