Experienced dentist in Arden, NC describes treatment for missing teeth with dental implants

Missing teeth can negatively impact the smile. Dr. Forest Christopher Port and his team of professionals at the Family Dental Health of South Asheville in Arden, NC encourage patients who are interested in treatment with dental implants to ask their dentist to describe the process, discuss the advantages, and provide alternatives so patients can make an educated decision in regard to their oral health and repair.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant functions as a natural tooth root would. The implant itself is a small post that looks like a screw. It is placed into the bone of the jaw using oral surgery and derives its strength and durability from the bone. It also stimulates bone growth through osseointegration. Many patients choose dental implants in a variety of situations. They can be used to:

  • Replace a single tooth when restored with a dental crown
  • Support a dental bridge on one or both sides of the restoration
  • Stabilize full cosmetic dentures for optimum fit and function

Many patients love the idea of having a permanent restoration in their smile that requires no special care, something that allows them to forget that they have experienced the loss of a tooth! Dental implants are a wonderful solution for many of our patients who are suitable candidates.

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

The best candidates for dental implants are patients who have enough bone structure to successfully support the restoration. This helps ensure that the surgical treatment is effective and successful. Patients who are serious about having dental implants placed but do not have enough bone may consider the benefits of bone grafting, a separate procedure that builds up the bone in the jaw to prepare it for the placement of implants.

What is the process of receiving a dental implant?

First, Dr. Port assesses patients smiles and determines if they are candidates. This includes x-rays which are used to look at the structure of the bone and properly plan the placement of the dental implants. Once this has been done and patients have chosen to move forward with dental implants, surgery is scheduled. Oral surgery is performed during which the implant is put into the bone. Over time, osseointegration occurs, which is the bone growth that fuses around the implant to hold it firmly in place. This can take several weeks. Once completed and verified with x-rays at the dental office, patients can then have their dental implant restored. This will vary, depending on the purpose of the implant, whether it was placed to hold a crown, bridge, or denture. Restorations made at the Family Dental Health of South Asheville are fabricated with the highest quality materials to ensure beautiful repairs and long-lasting results.

What are my options if I choose not to use a dental implant?

Dental implants are just one of several methods of repairing the smile. Dr. Port consults with patients during their initial appointment to educate them on the ways in which they can restore their smile’s function and appearance. If patients choose not to have dental implants placed, they may be better suited for alternatives such as dental bridges or dentures. There is no “one size fits all” option for every patient, so we work with each individual to develop a treatment plan best for their specific needs and desires. We also take into consideration the financial responsibility with restorations, and accept insurance coverage whenever possible.
