Experienced Asheville, NC dentist believes everyone should know the early signs of gum disease

Have you noticed a difference in your gums lately? Have you been brushing your teeth and noticed some bleeding? Dr. Christopher Port, in Asheville, NC, believes in patient education. He wants everyone to know the early signs of gum disease so they can come in and be treated promptly, before the problem worsens. Gum disease is one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss. If it is caught in its earliest stages, gum disease is a condition that is easily solved with minor treatment and patient education.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease occurs when bacterial infections develop at the gumline. Bacteria can form in plaque and release acids that will cause gum tissue to become inflamed. If this beginning stage is left untreated, the body’s response and the ongoing infection can cause receding gums and bone loss. Advanced gum disease is linked in many studies with other health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

Symptoms of gum disease:

  • Red and swollen gums: This is one of the first signs. Your gums may also feel painful or bleed easily during brushing.
  • Bad breath: The more plaque that you have in your mouth, the higher chance your breath will be bad on a regular basis.
  • Receding gums: If your gums appear to have receded, this is a sign of gum disease.
  • Sensitive teeth: If your teeth become extremely cold or heat sensitive, it can be a sign that your gums are not okay.

Treatments for gingivitis:
