Sleep Apnea

Asheville area patients ask, is sleep apnea real?

Dr. Christopher Port of the Family Dental Health of South Asheville understands how important it is to have a beautiful smile and live a healthy lifestyle. When conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea become a problem, it is important to see a professional for effective treatment. Is sleep apnea a real problem?

Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder that can have a negative impact on lifestyle and health. This condition is caused by a blockage in the airway, which restricts the ability to breathe. When this occurs, patients awaken to catch their breath. If this cycle occurs hundreds of times in one night, it can keep patients from reaching the deep levels of sleep they need to restore their body’s energy and mind, thus affecting their day-to-day lifestyle and health. It can put them at risk for a myriad of issues including depression, anxiety, poor concentration, memory loss, daytime fatigue, and chronic headaches.

Patients who believe they are experiencing the signs and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea are urged to speak with their physician about the condition. A physician can schedule a sleep study during which patients will be evaluated for obstructive sleep apnea. Once properly diagnosed, patients can speak to professionals about the treatment options available. For some, CPAP devices can be helpful, though cumbersome. This results in poor compliance. Instead, patients may want to speak to their dentist about oral appliance therapy.

Oral appliance therapy uses a special mouth guard to hold down the tongue and keep the airways open. It can realign the jaw to ensure air can flow into the throat. Not only is this option affordable but it is also more comfortable while still being effective at treating the mild to moderate cases of the condition.

Dr. Christopher Port of the Family Dental Health of South Asheville encourages patients who have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea to speak to him and his team about viable solutions. We welcome new patients and are ready to visit with you!
