Dental team in the Asheville area provides innovative teeth straightening treatment for different types of malocclusion

When the upper teeth protrude slightly over the lower teeth, it is a normal bite. An abnormal bite, or malocclusion, is classified by how the teeth fit together. Patients often ask the Family Dental Health of South Asheville about teeth straightening treatment that can improve different types of malocclusion. Our team provides innovative orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign to straighten teeth and improve the bite.

There are many types of malocclusion including crowded teeth, open bite, overbite, underbite, and cross bite. Permanent teeth may have difficulty coming in properly when teeth are crowded. When the upper and lower teeth do not overlap but the molars fit together, an open bite may be present. If the upper front teeth reach over the lower front teeth, patients may suffer from an overbite. Underbite involves lower front teeth protruding farther forward than the upper front teeth. When upper teeth fit in the wrong side of the lower teeth, there may be a cross bite.

Invisalign involves plastic aligner trays that gently move the teeth into proper position over time. Invisalign can be ideal for mild to moderate misalignment of the bite and crowded or overlapping teeth. Patients can look forward to smooth plastic aligners that are comfortable to wear during treatment that lasts typically 12 to 18 months. This treatment length is significantly shorter than the typical two to three years required for traditional metal braces.

Adults and teenagers find Invisalign is convenient because the aligners can be removed for eating, drinking, and even special occasions. We recommend wearing the aligners for at least 20-22 hours per day. The aligners can also be removed for brushing and flossing. With Invisalign, patients can eat the foods they love such as apples without concern of breaking the wires or food becoming trapped between the teeth and wires. There is no need to be concerned about the metal wires or brackets of conventional braces that can irritate the cheeks or gums.
